The Annual Meeting
Lisbon, 10–14 October 2008
The 2008 Annual Meeting, which will wrap up the SHOT's year-long fiftieth-anniversary celebration, convenes in Lisbon, the westernmost city in mainland Europe, 10–14 October. All sessions and meetings will take place in the VIP Executive Arts Hotel, located in Parque das Nações.

Proposals sought for 2012
The Sites Committee seeks proposals from scholars and institutions outside North America to host the SHOT annual meeting in summer or fall 2012. Interested parties should e-mail a letter of intent by October 1, 2008. The letter will signify an intention to submit at a later date a more formal proposal to host the annual meeting. It should briefly describe local institutional support, members of a local arrangements committee, suggested tours of interest to historians of technology, web hosting abilities, possible sources of financial sponsorship, and proposed dates. Please do not contact local hotels at this point to discuss a meeting contract. However, it would be useful for the letter of intent to note the availability of reasonable hotels in the vicinity and also to note whether universities or any other institutions in the area might provide locations for paper sessions, receptions, or other meeting functions for free or at reduced cost.
The Sites Committee encourages potential hosts to contact us in advance of the October 1, 2008 deadline to discuss the letter in more detail. Committee members are Molly Berger, chair (molly.berger@case.edu), Maja Fjaestad (majaf@kth.se), and Tom Zeller (tzeller@umd.edu).
Please send your letter of intent by October 1 to all three members of the Sites Committee, and also to SHOT secretary Amy Bix (shot@iastate.edu), SHOT president Steve Usselman (steve.usselman@hts.gatech.edu), and SHOT vice president Arne Kaijser (arnek@kth.se).
Past meetings
- Washington, D.C., 18–21 October 2007, the Capital Hilton. The 2007 meeting kicked off SHOT's two-year fiftieth anniversary celebration and launched its second half century around the unifying theme “Looking Back, Looking Beyond.” The meeting featured a special day-long workshop reviewing accomplishments and challenges in the history of technology; a three-generation plenary session; a luncheon honoring da Vinci medalists; and a rich offering of gatherings, entertainment, and sessions.
